Mike will show you how realism is achieved by closely studying textures, and then mastering the ways to interpret them and commit them to paper. These workshops will provide you with a greater ability to explore and understand textures, the techniques required to render them in a believable way, and you will learn both the "how" and the "why". Whatever your present ability, you will leave with a new-found knowledge of how to draw and use textures to the benefit of your work.

Paper, pencils and all other necessary supplies are included. However, if you prefer to use your own favourite pencils and tools, please bring them with you. We hope to have a number of table-top drawing boards available but, if you can, please bring your own.

Sycamore Fine Arts, has a few of Mike's original drawings on display, and prints will be available for you to study in close detail. Mike be will be happy to answer all queries and demonstrate specific techniques used. Please feel free to bring examples of your own work along for critique or advice.

Ahn was most recently honored with an award as a Grand Artist from the Italian Cultural Association of Art.  The association presented awards to artists of excellence  from 23 countries, with Ahn being the sole recipient from the
United States.  The special four hour ceremoney that Ahn participated in was held in Lecce, Italy and was given in honor of the 500th Anniversary of Michelangelo's work on the Sistine Chapel.

Just prior to getting that award, Ahn received the American Art Collector Award of Excellence; of second place, for his painting "Song of Reverence", in the Oil Painter's of
America's 17th annual national competition.

Ahn is an art professor at Andrew's University in Berrien Springs,

Peace on Earth
Location: Sycamore Fine Arts / the Old Bag Factory
Event Dates: 11/7/2008 - 1/10/2009
Reception: 11/7/2009 • 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

40 professional artists are submitting one or two pieces of art work for this exhibit.  Organizer Diane Overmyer deliberately invited artists working in a wide range of mediums with differing backgrounds, or perspectives to enter work into this exhibit. She hopes the exhibit will help visitors not only to think about world peace but also about how we treat people who are living in our own communities. Additionally the exhibit itself will stand as a metaphor for appreciating each other's differences.

During the first few weeks of the exhibit there also will be 50 cards created with messages of peace and goodwill on display at The Old Bag Factory.  The cards were created by local school children.  Near the end of November the cards will be sent to the Middle East to be distributed to Islamic school children.  Mennonite Central Committee is handling the distribution of the cards and provided guidelines for the content of the cards, so as not to offend anyone receiving the cards.  As a result the cards will focus on peace and friendship, while not giving reference to politics or religion.

Meditations
Location: Sycamore Fine Arts
Event Dates: 9/5/2008 - 10/29/2008
Reception: 9/5/2008 • 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This is an art exhibit of  sculpture and paintings that have been created for meditative purposes, to bring peace and tranquility to people's lives.  Works on display will include non-functional and functional sculpture by David Orth of Chicago, with oil and pastel paintings by Diane Overmyer and Susie Russell of Northern Indiana.

About the Artists:

David Orth has been a prominent figure on the Chicago art scene the 1970's.  He has had his work exhibited in both art galleries and museums around the country.   He regularly works with architects and interior designers to create sight specific work.  Orth's work has a sophisticated, yet organic earthy quality to it.  Subtle textures and rich patinas add to the interest and warmth of the work.  He draws on the beauty of clean, uncomplicated lines and planes.  His work has been described as spacing the gap between art and furniture.

Among other places, Orth lived in both Costa Rica, Guatemala prior to moving to Chicago.  Being exposed to ancient art forms and artist's techniques that by today's standards might be considered as primitive, helped to feed both his vision and the processes he employs to create his work.  In addition to his art education he also has two degrees in philosophy.  Orth has taught and helped to develop academic courses at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and several other colleges throughout the Midwest.

Along with large works, Orth will be exhibiting a number of extraordinary urns.  His thoughts about life and death led to a natural progression toward these truly unique vessels.  "A funeral urn should not remind you of a funeral or even an urn. An urn should be something quietly beautiful and deeply resonate - something to gather your loss and your love, and to help you carry these things forward into your own evolving life." (David Orth)

Susie Russell has been drawing and painting her whole life.  She had raised 7 children, depending heavily on the sales of her art work.  In 2002 she returned to college to study fine art at Indiana University South Bend.  While there she received the coveted Chancellor's Award in the first student show that she participated in. She also has had work exhibited in galleries and many juried competitions in the Midwest.

Subtle color variations and careful, soft brush work often characterize Russell's oil paintings.  Now as a busy grandmother, sometimes flying from one end of the country to other, she values the time she is able to spend focusing on her art work in her studio which is in Milford, Indiana.

Diane Overmyer met Susie Russell while she also was studying IUSB.  She and Russell have been close friends since that time.  Overmyer opened Sycamore Fine Arts in June of 2006.  She divides her time between running the art gallery, and creating her own art work.  Unlike Russel, Overmyer's work often is created with bright colors variations and quick loose brush work.   For this exhibit Overmyer has quieted her palette a bit, but there still will some pieces that have deep color intensity.

The two painters have never had an exhibit together with their paintings being the only 2-D work on display so they are looking forward to seeing the similarities and differences that have occurred while they have been preparing for this exhibit.
Both Russell and Overmyer have a passion for landscape painting.  Much of the work will consist on quiet views fields and woods.  While most of the works are quite representational, others contain a higher degree of abstraction.  The unifying element with the entire exhibit is the intrinsic beauty that each artist has found in their subject matter.

Event Dates: 7/3/2008 - 8/30/2008
Reception: 7/11/2008 • 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

We are pleased to be hosting a group art exhibit titled "Small Wonders". The exhibit is a mix of small traditional fine art and small intricate fine craft works. Owner Diane Overmyer is eager to see visitor's reaction to the exhibit.  She has worked hard to bring in some work from favorite artists in the gallery along with new artists that people in the region don't normally get to see.  Each artist's work is very different from the other artist's in the exhibit.  Artwork ranging from traditional small-scale oil paintings and pastels, to amazingly intricate 3-D glass, wood and cast stone creations will be on display.
